The method involves determining authentication parameters corresponding to identification characteristics during pairing without an option of intervention of terminal users, or automatically negotiating the parameters based on close-range communication, where a terminal (2) i.e. mobile phone, is coupled to a media center (1) i.e. network router, with respect to the use of media data e.g. image data. A valid key for decoding the media data is transmitted by the media center to an authorized terminal before coding of the media data, if the authorized terminal has no key or requests for the key. An independent claim is also included for a system for secure transmission of media data over a network, comprising an external source.
