Advanced Air Deploy Sonobuoy
A smaller package for air deploy active receivers is desired to allow new platforms to be used for launch. In addition a larger sonobuoy array is also desired but must fit into the existing launch canisters.
APL researchers have invented a new ADAR which allows for a reduction in size to deploy the current standard sonobuoy configuration. This method uses a stacer which is a type of spring usually manufactured from beryllium copper or other spring material. The stacer is rolled into a helical, overlapping tube of decreasing diameter. It is stored by using the spring against its compressive preset state and forcing it into a storage cylinder. The stored length is 6 inches and the extended length is 20 feet.
