Method for the synthesis of carboxylic acids from aldehydes

Invention An improved method for the preparation of carboxylic acids from aldehydes. The improvements consist of reducing the amount of environment polluting chemicals, higher yields and higher reaction rates than with conventional methods. The Need The known processes for preparing carboxylic acids from the corresponding aldehydes usually make use of catalysts and reaction solvents that often lead to undesired side reactions. In addition, they also require elaborate purification steps, to which the product of the reaction must be subjected in order to obtain carboxylic acids. Non-catalytic processes known to date are frequently unsatisfactory in terms of the reaction rate and in relation to the conversion and selectivity for the required product. The present invention provides a non-catalytic process for the formation of aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids from the corresponding aldehydes. This oxidation process is carried in the environmentally-friendly media and without applying high-pressure conditions, thereby eliminating the potential hazardous situation. The invention provides carboxylic acids from aldehydes with low technical complexity and in high yield and purity. Potential Applications Many commercial carboxylic acids are produced via the oxidation of the corresponding aldehydes with molecular oxygen. Considering the large scale of these processes, such oxidation is potentially hazardous and requires complex reaction setup. In our process, the reactions proceed under atmospheric pressure and without the need to pass oxygen gas stream through the reaction media. The setup can be as simple as a typical reaction vessel equipped with either magnetic or mechanical stirrer. Under our conditions, the carboxylic acids are produced in very high yields and almost without the side products typical for the aldehyde oxidation processes. The reactions work very well for the preparation of several industrially important aliphatic carboxylic acids.
