The UK is fast becoming an important hub of open innovation, and according to Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude is leading the world in open data.

There are now more than 40,000 unique public sector datasets on www.data.gov.uk – from real-time traffic statistics to information about greenhouse gas emissions.

During a seminar for small and medium-sized businesses hosted by Digital Birmingham the minister said that open data is the raw material of the new industrial revolution.

To acknowledge the tenth anniversary of the publication of Henry Chesbrough’s landmark tome Open Innovation: The New Imperative for Creating and Profiting from Technology, the journal Research Policy is going to publish a special edition intended to update research on the area.

The issue entitled Open Innovation: New Insights and Evidence will be published some time in late 2013 and the guest editors are Henry Chesbrough, Ammon Salter, Wim Vanhaverbeke and Joel West.

Open source nonprofit organisation Mozilla is breathing new life into the documentary format with its recently launched Living Docs Project, an initiative that encourages collaborative, interactive web films.

Living Docs is a partnership between Mozilla, The Tribeca Film Institute, The Center for Social Media at American University, ITVS and BAVC and will foster the spirit of open innovation and collaboration in the documentary film genre.

New Report: Crowdsourcing Enjoys Spectacular Growth

The first comprehensive report on the enterprise crowdsourcing industry has revealed it to be in a very healthy state. The study was compiled by research firm massolution and collected data from 32 Crowdsourcing Service Providers (CSPs). The results revealed that crowdsourcing continued to demonstrate growth in 2011, with revenues increasing over 75% when compared to 2010.
