More Accurate Public Transport Data Courtesy of the Crowd

Moovit crowdsourced transit appGetting from A to B could become a whole lot easier thanks to the crowd and a new app called Moovit.

This crowdsourced transit app for iOS and Android is free to download and can determine accurate arrival times of trains and buses and the level of crowding from user locations.

Those riding public transport download the app and leave it open to receive and share live information about their trip. With the app open users are anonymously sharing the location and speed of the vehicle they are on.

How Does it Work?

Moovit monitors a user’s position to determine the route they are travelling, and this is combined with transport information provided by the city. In this way the app is able to alert commuters of any congestion and delays on their route. For example, if a train is due in ten minutes and a fellow user on that train is thirty minutes away, the waiting commuter is informed.

Providing up-to-the minute information generated by the crowd can remove a lot of the hassle and frustration of public transportation systems. Keeping commuters in the know gives them the opportunity to take alternative routes or make different plans.

In addition to this core function, the app can let users know on which vehicles there are available seats, and arriving buses and trains can be tracked on a live map.

Commuters can also make active contributions by inputting relevant information such as overcrowding or accidents en route that are causing delays.
