The World Bank and the Government of Moldova Need Your Help

January 8, 2012 By IdeaConnection

The World Bank has announced that it is partnering with the Government of Moldova to organise a competitive Open Innovation Hackathon focused on the reuse of open data in Moldova.

The aim is ambitious. Though the development of killer apps is a must the priority is to build a high capacity ecosystem around the country’s open data.

“The long-term objectives are not the release of open data or the creation of killer apps, though both are unquestionably valuable. The real goal is to catalyze new partnerships that become long-term producers of viable apps for an Innovation Economy.”

Creating apps from open data contests has fans and detractors. Yes, innovative and useful apps can be generated, but critics point out that in some contests the apps produced are similar to each other and have already been created. And there are instances where enthusiasm for the winners wanes once the competition closes.

The World Bank/Government of Moldova OI hackathon aims to keep the momentum going with continuous creation of apps rather than just through the organisation of events. It is hoped that this will lead to faster development and smarter innovation.

Organisers have developed what they consider a more sustainable approach to open data through four activity phases focused on:

  • Demand identification
  • Open data release
  • Ideation/proof of concept, and
  • Prototyping, scaling and funding of apps development

The hackathon organisers are keen for input on how this could work better and want to hear from anyone with good ideas. You can read their proposal here.  There is a comments form at the end for you to chip in with your thoughts.
