Vincent P.Gutschick, Michael H. Barron, David A. Waechter, and Michael Wolf. Method and apparatus for measuring solar radiation in a vegetative canopy. U.S.Patent 4,678,330. 7 July 1987. We adapted small photodiodes to generate voltages linear in irradiance on moving leaves, and we then digitized the voltages to generate records at any desirable time interval. Another invention of mine, not patented, is a complete methodology for estimating leaf area on intact plants from images. I have designed, built, and operated electronic sensor / datalogger systems for field measurements of meteorological variables, thermal infrared emissions, and tree sapflow. I designed, built, and operated an extensive modification of the LI-COR LI-6200 portable photosynthesis system to work in open mode. LE Kay and I designed and built a high flow-through hydroponic system to study plant growth and uptake responses at extremely low solution levels of nutrients.
