Introduction According to the CDC, one third of the world’s population is infected with tuberculosis (TB)
with nearly 9 million newly infected and nearly 2 million related deaths each year. This respiratory disease is passed through the air, and these germs can stay active in an environment for hours. TB and other respiratory diseases pose a serious global health concern, especially in the developing world. Technology Description Professor Abernethy at the University of Washington has developed a method and device for simultaneous lighting and air purification using UV radiation. Utilizing passive ventilation and UV amplification, this technology is capable of efficient, continuous air purification. Its low cost and low energy consumption make it ideal for the developing world and areas of high risk, such as hospitals and other areas of high congregation. The design incorporates necessary precautions to prevent exposure of individuals to potentially harmful UV radiation. Business Opportunity Efficient and inexpensive air purification and lighting presents opportunities for worldwide healthcare. The ability to combine the sanitizing power of UV radiation with fluorescent lighting would allow for more cost-effective airborne pathogen control in high-risk and highcapacity facilities, such as hospitals and schools. This is especially important in locations with limited resources and high burdens of respiratory infections, such as parts of the developing world. Stage of Development A working prototype of this technology is in development. Intellectual Property Position The UW is currently reviewing this technology for worldwide patent protection.
