Controlled synthesis of nanowires, nanotubes and nanostructured materials using liquid crystalline and microemulsion templates

This technology describes novel, comprehensive techniques for efficient synthesis of monodisperse, consistently-shaped and uniform-sized II-VI Compound Semiconductor (CS) nanoparticles like ZnSe & CdSe. Different shaped nanocrystals constitute an im portant research tool in several emerging areas in Opto-electronics, Medical Devices and Diagnostics, Bioinformatics, Research in Biomolecular Interactions, Sensors and Detectors, National Security, Energy and Environment, Materials and Manufacturing , Computers and Telecommunication.

The basic process involves creating suspended 'nanoreactor' droplets containing a Zinc/Cadmium compound in an emulsion by mixing appropriate reactants in specific, pre-computed proportions. Bubbling a gas (Hyd gen Selenide) through the emulsion to react with the contents of the nanoreactors yields the Zn/Cd Selenide nanocrystals. The basic process is then generalized to yield a whole portfolio of pre-desired shapes. 3 compounds (two of them being non-polar n-heptane and polar formamide respectively) are combined in pre-computed specific proportions (by weight) to yield consistent, monodisperse liquid crystalline templates. The template-shapes have a one-to-one correspondence with the weight proportion s of reactants. Using gas bubbling, nanocrystals in varied shapes can be formed within the templates. The nanorods, nanowires, nanoplates, nanotubes and nano-‘other structures’ formed are crystalline and exhibit characteristic luminescence.
