Compound for Protection against Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury

An active ingredient in Chinese herbal medicine has been found to be useful for treating reperfusion injury. This plant-derived compound prevents the formation of free radicals, felt to be central to the pathophysiology of reperfusion injury. It is likely to have multiple applications, including transplantation, myocardial infarction, strokes, gut and limb ischemia and heart bypass surgery. Effectiveness has been demonstrated in a sheep model of cardiopulmonary bypass. Studies exploring the compounds benefit in a mouse model of stroke as well as animal models of myocardial infarction are beginning. Description (Set) Proposed Use (Set) Therapeutic for reperfusion injury, such as following coronary by-pass surgery, organ transplantation, myocardial infarction or stroke.
