Johns Hopkins Approved Wireless Portable Polysomnography Monitoring Device

Abstract (Set) Currently there are no clinically proven portable devices that objectively measure and record sleep activity in a reliable fashion at minimal inconvenience to the patient. While portable sleep testing may currently be used to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the inability to confirm whether a patient is actually asleep results in a prevalence of false-negative findings. Sleep specialists must rely on patient sleep diaries, which are generally inaccurate due to their subjective nature. Portable polysomnography presents a viable option for effective sleep monitoring, as the presence of electroencephalographic (EEG) parameters shall provide an effective differentiation of wake versus sleep, while allowing for normal sleep staging. Description (Set) Development has begun on an advanced portable polysomnography (PSG) system that incorporates electroencephalography (EEG). EEG waves shall be detected by a specially designed headset, currently in the concept phase, to attach to an already designed vest containing an electronic sensor measures EKG, respiratory effort, body position, muscle tone, and pulse oximetry. This technology shall improve the state-of-the-art by using a wireless configuration which overcomes the problems normally associated with the EEG leads. Additional options such as video recording using an internet based system could also be included as part of the system when indicated for cases where the behavioral manifestations would be beneficial for characterizing the condition (e.g. REM sleep behavioral disorder, nocturnal eating disorder, seizures etc.) Proposed Use (Set) Portable sleep polysomnography for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea and other sleep disorders; Characterization of medical or behavioral conditions impacting the sleep process
