Compounds with Effects on Potassium Channels

KCNQ channels play a role in cardiac and neuronal membrane excitability. Scientists at JHU have identified a series of novel compound that potently activates KCNQ channels. Initial studies of electrophysiology using whole cell recording and animal models revealed that the compound potentiates KCNQ current in transiently transfected chinese hamster ovary cells and native cells. Further molecular studies suggest the compounds act via different mechanisms discovered to date. Description (Set) Proposed Use (Set) Understanding the mechanism by which the novel compound works is conceptually interesting and pharmacologically relevant for the study of KCNQ channel modulation and future drug development for cardiac diseases and for the treatment of neurological conditions and pain.
