Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment of Eye Injury and Infection

Abstract (Set) According to the World Health Organization, cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world. Approximately 10 million cataract operations are performed each year in the world. By the year 2020 the number of blind people over 60 years of age will likely reach 54 million world-wide if current trends continue. Although it is usually treated successfully, there are a number of surgery-related complications that are of considerable clinical importance. Currently, there is no diagnostic technology to determine those patients at greater risk for complications and/or infection. JHU scientists, using extensive separation/mass spectrometer strategy, identified 98 non-redundant proteins in the aqueous humor. These proteins can be divided into four functional groups: cell-cell interactions/wound healing, proteases and protease inhibitors, anti-oxidant protection and antibacterial/anti-inflammatory proteins. This technology focuses on the protective role of proteins in the aqueous humor against eye injury and bacterial proliferation after surgery insult and the use of one or more proteins for diagnosis and therapeutic treatments. Description (Set) Proposed Use (Set) Selected proteins in the aqueous humor can be used for therapeutic treatment and for diagnosis or prognosis of patients, who are at risk of complications or bacterial infections before, during or after surgery.
