Breast Milk Component Provides Protection Against Acute Respiratory Diseases

Description (Set) It has long been established that breast milk provides a protective role against acute respiratory disease. Scientists at Johns Hopkins University have identified a protective substance in breast milk that significantly decreases the risk of acute lung disease. The differences that are observed in the epidemiological studies in infants directly correlate with observations in a mouse model of acute respiratory disease. Current studies are involved in elucidating the protective mechanism of action which may have protective and beneficial effects on other illnesses which include asthma, diarrhea, and diabetes. Proposed Use (Set) This invention would allow for supplementation of commercial infant formulas to extend the benefits of breast milk to infants receiving formula as their main or supplemental source of nutrition.
