Method of Forming a Solar Cell Absorber Layer

A method of forming a layer of CuxZny(Gp14)z(Gp16) w where [x/(y+z) lies in the range 0.6 - 1.4], y/(y + z) lies in the range 0.25 - 0.7 and w/(x + y + z) lies in the range 0.8 - 1.2 comprising the steps of : depositing a primary structure on a substrate, the primary structure comprising a first component, a second component and a third component substantially in the stoichiometric ratio x:y:z, the first component comprising Cu, the second component comprising Zn and the third component comprising a Gp14 element where x ~ y + z and x/(y +z) lies in the range 0.6 - 1.4, y/(y + z) lies in the range 0.25 - 0.7; forming a secondary structure by exposing the primary structure to a fourth component comprising a Gp16 element whereby the primary structure reacts with the fourth component to form the secondary structure, the secondary structure comprising the first, second, third and fourth components substantially in the stoichiometric ratio x:y:z:w wherein the primary structure comprises a layer of the first component, a layer of the second component, a layer of the third component and at least a further layer of one selected from amongst the first, second and third components, immediately adjacent layers of the primary structure being of different respective components to one another.
