Abstract (Set) Epigenetic changes have been implicated in the pathogenesis of solid tumors and almost all types of cancers primarily via abnormal promoter hypermethylation and silencing of tumor suppressor gene expression. Epigenetic changes are changes in an organism brought about by alterations in the action of genes. JHU scientists have discovered a method to diagnose cancer, specifically, but not limited to, Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC) and Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) from body fluids, stool, and tissue samples using a unique panel of genes that when hypomethylated act as oncogenes. This method is additionally useful for prognostic analyses and determining the effectiveness of treatments for the above mentioned cancers.
