Variant Gene Increases Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

Description (Set) Type II Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) represents a major global health challenge with over 170 million people affected worldwide. It is a condition in which the body fails to properly use insulin and additionally, is generally combined with relative insulin deficiency. Scientists have recently found a gene variant that increases the risk of T2DM. Variations in the gene are associated with as much as 16% of the genetic load of T2DM in specific populations. The current findings provide a more consistent target gene for T2DM than previously shown. Proposed Use (Set) This invention is a diagnostic for people at risk for Type II diabetes mellitus as well as providing a therapeutic target for the prevention and treatment of the disease.
